Sport Horse Breeding

Sport Horse Breeding

Our dedicated stud vets have a wealth of experience and knowledge in sport horse breeding and can offer a range of artificial breeding options for your mare These include insemination with fresh, chilled, or frozen semen and embryo transfer.

We are here to guide you through the process and understand that it can be an exciting but daunting time if you’re new to breeding. Our aim is to maximise your mare’s breeding potential with as little stress to you as possible. We can offer advice on everything from which breeding method is best suited to your mare to possible stallion choices and how to go about ordering semen. These services can be provided at your own yard or at our dedicated facility. The latter option allows us to tailor our breeding programme to suit your individual mare and situation.

Artificial Insemination (AI)

Insemination with chilled semen is easily carried out on your own yard. Scanning of mares being inseminated with chilled semen is required less frequently than for those being bred using frozen semen, and the semen can be delivered direct. Insemination with frozen semen involves more intensive monitoring of the mare in the final 48 hours prior to insemination. We recommend that ideally mares come to us for this period to maximise the chance of a successful conception.

Embryo Transfer (ET)

Embryo transfer is a great option if you have a mare you wish to continue competing, or an older mare who can no longer carry her own pregnancy. It can also allow you to maximise the genetic potential of your mare by making multiple crosses with different stallions in the same breeding season. The donor mare is bred, the embryo is retrieved at 7-8 days post-ovulation and transferred into a recipient mare who carries the foal to term. We can supply suitable recipient mares, or we are happy for you to supply your own.

Dedicated AI and ET facilities

Since 2019 we have worked with Julie Roche at Hill Cottage Farm Stud in Aderholt to allow us to offer a dedicated AI and ET service in smart purpose-built surroundings in a calm and quiet location. Julie has years of experience of competing and breeding her own competition horses and takes exceptional care of all the mares and foals that come through Hill Cottage Farm. Julie offers foaling down as well as managing her own herd of carefully selected recipient mares that we use for our embryo transfer programme.

We offer comprehensive sport horse breeding packages for all AI and ET services. All prices, as well as more detailed information about the various processes involved in artificial breeding and the options available to you, are published in our annual AI and ET Brochure. Please give the office team a call if you would like a copy sent to you. If you have any further questions regarding breeding your mare please do not hesitate to get in touch.
